You published my letter about the impasse between Oxford United and Firoz Kassam (Oxford Mail, September 30).

Since then, I have received, through the post, an anonymous letter.

Normally, I would ignore such a letter, but this one includes a couple of statements that need challenging.

The writer states: "I cannot believe you think that Kassam earns more money from United's home matches than United themselves. He, I guess, would be over the moon to receive just the equivalent of gate money, a conservative £60,000 per game."

This person obviously thinks that the gate money is all profit.

He or she ignores the fact that out of this money, the club has to pay rent, wages, stewarding, policing etc.

The fact that, year after year, the club's accounts show a trading loss proves that United do not make money on match days.

However, the club generates profit for Mr Kassam through increased trade at his many outlets on the site.

The writer also states: "It's laughable for you to say that there is little the club can do to alleviate matters.

"United's playing staff, full-time unlike some of the other clubs, enjoy (they don't earn them) the highest salaries in the league.

"With the facilities and support staff at the club and the way they are looked after, they are the envy of all the other clubs in the league."

All I can say is — if they are envied so much, why do many of these players prefer to join other clubs rather than Oxford?

The writer of the mysterious letter should understand that the call for a boycott of Mr Kassam was written 'tongue in cheek'.

I realise that the proposal is unrealistic, shame really — if Mr Kassam lost all his revenue from Grenoble Road, it might just twist his arm. If my mysterious correspondent wishes to respond, can I ask that he or she sends a signed letter or responds through the Oxford Mail?
