Sir — Andrew J. Henderson (Letters, September 5) is clearly irritated by my suggestion that students not paying council tax should not be able to park their cars on the street. He suggests, I quote, that students in private accommodation, along with private tenants and residents should all be able to park their cars in an allocated space on the street or elsewhere.

I am amazed that he would assume that we have 'allocated' spaces in any streets in the Headington and East Oxford areas.

Until we have the promised parking restrictions, there will be no allocation, and even then, there is unlikely to be enough parking spaces to go around. Please don't assume to park outside your house just because you have a permit!

It's all very well saying that we should all have the same rights, but there is not enough road space to accommodate more cars. Already cars are parked right up to the corners of roads, making it difficult for pedestrians and prams to move in safety. That is not counting the difficulty that our fire engines and dust carts have in getting round those corners.

As I mentioned in my letter on August 29, there is good transport in Oxford for students to use, and that Oxford Brookes should be responsible for the parking for those students who need to travel and whose courses they provide.
