To cut a long story short, I finished Sunday's London Marathon. But that wouldn't make much of a blog entry, so here is the full story.
I knew it was going to be a hot day so wore a cap and drunk as much water and Lucozade as I could on the route. What I didn't appreciate was how much the conditions would affect me.
Having trained in typically overcast British weather, it was just typical that I made my marathon debut in the hottest temperatures the event had witnessed.
The first half went fairly well, but I when I reached 13.1 miles in 1hr 29mins I felt a lot more tired than I had expected.
By the time I reached 15 miles, I knew a sub-3 hour run was beyond me for this time, but kept plodding on, albeit at a slowing pace.
I reached the 40km (24.8 mile) mark in 3hr 1min and a finish somewhere around 3:12 or 13 looked on the cards. Considering the now near 24 degree heat and humidity, I would have been happy with that.
I was aware that the heat was having an impact on my running, with my stride weaker than it had been previously.
But then, just after 25 miles, I stumbled, blacked out and collapsed.
I was stretchered off by the St John Ambulance and recuperated in their hut, which was luckily next to my collapse point.
Half an hour later I was okay to finish, but had to hobble the final mile or so in 22 minutes as I had completely seized up, finishing in 3:57!
I got loads of cheers and jelly babies as I struggled in and have not been put off running another marathon.
Even the great Haile Gebreselassie didn't finish, so I managed to beat him.
That's it for my marathon blog, but I will return here soon in a different guise.
