When I read Billy Turley's comments in the Oxford Mail on Friday about how the U's would win rather than hope to get a victory, I always knew we were on to a loser.
And so it proved against Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.
One thing he should have learnt in all his years as a keeper is not to assume anything in football, or sport in general, particularly a win.
You've got to work hard to achieve success.
His quotes smacked of arrogance, giving the impression the U's just had to turn up to get the three points.
It meant all yer FGR management had to do was to pin his comments on the dressing room door – they didn't need to do a teamtalk.
I was optimistic when I left the ground after the Stevenage game because the U's seemed to have got back on track with a decent run, but against FGR it was replaced by frustration.
The U's had a golden chance to close the gap on Dagenham to five points, admittedly having played a game more, and turn the heat up on the leaders. But they failed miserably.
It's hard to explain why a team that has been playing well and was top of the form guide, suddenly doesn't show up, although FGR did probably deserve their victory.
I can only assume that the attitude portrayed by Turley, transmitted to some of the other players, particularly in defence.
We seemed to have sorted out the problems we had at set-pieces. If your attitude is not right, you're not going to win anything.
Against Stevenage the U's defended well, but they seemed to forget that you have to do that all the time. You can't afford to switch off.
Hopefully, the result is just a blip and the U's can get it right for tonight's tough game against Kidderminster.
