With the imminent threat of a writer's strike affecting film production over the next couple of years, Hollywood is obviously feeling a little concerned. Films are being rushed into production and big-budget blockbusters are being postponed, some indefinitely. Now appealing though this is, it made me wonder just what the role of screenwriter is on a big money summer movie.
Do they agonise long into the night over their thesaurus trying to craft the perfect put down for Bruce Willis to mutter inaudibly whilst toting an AK 47?
Do they have long and productive consultations with the marketing men over just how many types of robot to include in the final battle sequence?
Do they study Freud and Jung, looking for the subtlety of personality that can really bring alive their heroine as she faces the masked killer in her underwear?
Do they follow the news, desperate for the latest leftwing political idea, which they can shoehorn into the protagonists grand soliloquy, thus appeasing the many staunch democrats who need reassurance that their huge fees are not going to waste? (Apologies to Tim Robbins and Sean Penn)

I guess we'll never know, but long may the strike continue.

Oh and Mr. Weinstein, if you need a cheap hack, who asks no questions and works for minimum wage, I'm your man.
