New walking trails have been opened at a popular landscape in Oxfordshire to make enjoying nature easier for walkers this winter.

Four new routes have been opened at the Wittenham Clumps by Earth Trust, the charity which manages what it describes as one of Oxfordshire's 'best-loved' landscapes.

Ranging from a short and gentle circuit for families and first-time visitors to a long, grassland and woodland-traversing trek through farmland, the clearly waymarked walks are designed for all.

Earth Trust Chief Executive, Ian Barrett, said: “Wittenham Clumps is a place people return to again and again, but these trails offer fresh ways to experience it.

"Whether you're out with the family, want a quick breath of fresh air or are ready for a longer countryside walk, there is a route to help you feel confident setting out.

"We hope the maps, waymarking and a welcoming stop at our pop-up café will make it even easier for more people to enjoy time in nature this half term and throughout the year."

The Farm Nature Trail is a 1.5km short walk, which takes about 30 minutes on a mostly flat, circular route from the visitor centre, while The Clumps Heritage Trail is the same distance but more 'energetic', with a steep climb to Round Hill and its panoramic views.

Slightly longer, the College Farm Trails is a 2.8km varied and circular route from Neptune Wood car park, while the longest new walk is the Landscape Discovery Trail, a 5.7km romp through the Clumps landscape.

Free route maps are available at Earth Trust's new pop-up cafe at the Visitor Centre, open seven days a week from 9am to 3pm.
