An Oxfordshire road remains closed after builders were injured in a building site collapse.

AA has confirmed that a section of the A4260 Cherwell Street is shut in Banbury this morning (Thursday, October 22) due to an "unsafe building".

The alert states: "Road closed due to unsafe building on A4260 Cherwell Street Both ways between Bridge Street and George Street. Ongoing since Wednesday afternoon."

Nine workers were on the construction site at the time of the incident on Wednesday morning, October 21.

A huge emergency services response was launched with a full road closure of Cherwell Street bringing traffic in nearby parts of the town to a standstill.

The ambulance spokesman said: "The two patients have both been taken to the John Radcliffe in Oxford - one with head and leg injuries, and one with severe injuries.

"The second patient was accompanied by the Thames Valley Air Ambulance critical care team to the JR."

Meanwhile, police said the building had partially collapsed during the incident and that officers were supporting other emergency services.

The building site, a former car sales garage and next to a Morrisons petrol station, is currently being transformed into 19 new apartments.

The former garage was demolished last year and much progress has already been made on the new building.

Scaffolding has been placed around the structure as well as white sheets obscuring much the work done so far.

The Health and Safety Executive's spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the incident and making enquiries."
