A thug who hit his partner so hard that she was left 'crying on the floor' has been jailed.

Scott Broom attacked the woman on two separate occasions this year, Oxford Crown Court heard.

The 53-year-old, of Alice Smith Square, Littlemore, Oxford, had previously attacked the woman in 2019 and a restraining order was imposed.

However he breached that when they got back together in 2024.

Broom had been due to stand trial for two counts of assault, occasioning actual bodily harm.

However, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of assault by beating which was accepted by the prosecution.

He previously pleaded guilty to breaching the restraining order.

Broom was sentenced immediately. The court heard that after the incident in 2019, he saw the woman again in 2024 and rekindled the relationship.

Prosecutor Mark Karpinski read extracts of the victim's witness statement.

It said: "Scott presented himself as a completely different person. He said he stopped using alcohol and drugs.

"I gave him another chance, I didn't do so naïvely. The relationship had a significant impact on me."

The court heard the victim suffered panic attacks and couldn't sleep.

The first attack took place on May 16 this year. The court heard that Broom was behaving erratically.

The victim's witness statement said: "His behaviour was odd. He was carrying a knife.

"He attacked me, it all happened very quickly. He pushed me hard in the chest with both hands. I fell to the floor.

"He was being very aggressive."

During the attack, the victim told Broom: "Please stop, get off me, leave me alone."

The statement added: "He pulled my hair and ripped my earring. I was crying on the floor and he just left."

The second incident took place on June 7.

The victim's statement said: "He whacked me so hard, I burst into tears immediately. I had given up at that point, but I was in agony."

Mr Karpinski told the court that Broom had 16 previous convictions for 30 offences, which include violence against the same victim.

Kuljeet Dobe, mitigating, told the court that Broom had been on remand for four months.

He added: "Since being in custody, it has been productive. He has got on with it.

"He said he will keep away from her. He says she contacted him in the past. He has tried very hard to keep away from her.

"He accepts he pushed her to the floor. It's a very unsavoury set of circumstances and could have all been avoided."

Judge Ian Pringle KC handed Broom a prison sentence of 10 months. A new restraining order was also put in place, which will last for 10 years.

The judge said: "Put this episode behind you, don't contact her again."
