An uplifting stage play is set to bring the true story of a forgotten 1960s radio heroine to life on the Oxford stage.
Down to Chance, a heartwarming production by Maybe You Like It Productions, will be performed in Oxford and Chipping Norton in October as part of its autumn tour across south east England.
The play is based on the remarkable true story of Genie Chance, a part-time radio reporter who became a lifeline for her community during the 1964 Alaskan earthquake - the largest in US history.
Ellie Jay Cooper, who wrote and stars in the play, said: "The earthquake and especially Genie Chance’s calm and measured broadcasting has largely been forgotten.

"At a time when technology is so often seen as increasing isolation and division, this story feels more important than ever: a reminder that technology can bring us together and make us feel less alone."
The play unfolds over 65 minutes and is recommended for audiences aged 12 and above.
Set in Anchorage, Alaska, it follows Genie Chance as she risks everything to keep her community informed and united amid chaos and destruction.
Two performers, Ms Cooper and Robert Merriam, take on nearly 30 roles between them, bringing to life a community under strain with energy and humour.
The production uses vintage props and costumes to transport audiences to the 1960s, with immersive sound design by Nathan May that includes audio effects from authentic 1960s radios.
Caleb Barron, the play’s director, said: "Genie's story of hope, courage and strength in the face of adversity is an inspiring one.
"The show gives an insight too into the whole community that came together around Genie to save countless lives in a crisis.
"I hope audiences come away reminded of the power of community."
Down to Chance has already enjoyed a sold-out run at London’s Pleasance Theatre and was a hit at the 2025 Edinburgh Festival.
It is produced by House Southeast Theatre Network, which helps bring high-quality theatre to venues across the South East and East of England.
The Theatre, Chipping Norton, will host the play on October 14 at 7.30pm. This will be followed by a performance at The Old Fire Station at 8pm on October 15.
Maybe You Like It Productions are Pleasance Associate Artists for 2025–2027.
The play was developed with support from Theatre Royal Plymouth and The Pleasance as part of the Edinburgh National Partnerships Programme.
