A man has been named and charged after armed police responded to an alleged'knife incident' in Oxford.
Thames Valley Police has named and charged a man who was arrested in connection with an incident which occurred on Cowley Read, near the junction with Manzil Way, on Monday, August 24.
Witnesses saw a huge police presence including armed officers descend on the city street at about 4.20pm on Monday, with a cordon set up around the scene.
The force confirmed that they had responded to reports of a man allegedly 'armed with a knife' in the area, and quickly 'identified, disarmed and arrested' a suspect.
He was taken into police custody on the day, an no one was injured.
Thames Valley Police has now confirmed that a man has been charged with possessing a weapon.
Raymond Powell, of Barns Road, Oxford, was charged with one count of possession of a bladed article in a public place on Tuesday, August 25.
The 59-year-old has been released on unconditional bail and is due to appear at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on November 6.
At the time of the incident, a statement from the police said: "We would like to thank everyone for their patience, understanding and cooperation following the significant police presence on Cowley Road earlier today.
"We appreciate that seeing a large number of police officers and vehicles can be concerning.
"However, our priority will always be the safety of our communities, and today's response was necessary to ensure the incident was brought under control as quickly and safely as possible.
"We would like to thank local residents, businesses and visitors for their support while we dealt with the incident."
