Winter gritting lorries are being sent out to spread salt on Oxford's roads during the heatwave.
The lorries are being sent over this week and into the weekend because the extra grit can help stabilise the surface of the bitumen.
During hot weather, the bitumen used in surface dressing can soften and reactivate, which can cause road chippings to become loose.

This would then increase the risk of damage to both the road surface and vehicles driving along.
ODS's spokesman said: "Due to the current period of high temperatures, ODS on behalf of the Oxford City Council is undertaking precautionary gritting on a number of recently surface dressed roads across the area."
He added: "Motorists are advised to take extra care when travelling on affected roads.
"These measures are temporary and form part of standard highway maintenance practices during periods of extreme heat.
"We will continue to monitor conditions and carry out any necessary follow-up treatments, including sweeping excess material when appropriate.
"We thank residents and road users for their patience and cooperation in helping to keep the network safe and in good condition."
Although it sounds unusual, Oxford City Council isn't the only authority dusting off the gritters in June.
Warwickshire County Council and other authorities in Scotland have also had to spread the salt in the summer this year.
Meanwhile, in Byron Avenue, Grove, children have been reportedly picking up melting pieces of road and playing with them.
The ward councillors said they have raised it with the developer Persimmon Homes.
