Oxford University student Emma Watson has revealed that she mistook some birdwatchers for paparazzi in her garden.

The actress, who appeared as Hermione Granger in all eight Harry Potter films, grew up in Oxford and is now a Doctor of Philosophy student at the prestigious institution.

Ms Watson recently joined Prince William and Benedict Cumberbatch on stage at a sustainability forum at Frameless in central London.

The trio spoke about the environment, wildlife crime and climate anxiety, with the 36-year-old also reciting a short poem.

It was here at the event where Ms Watson shared an amusing anecdote about an incident with birdwatchers at her home.

She said: "I was in my living room, and I saw all these men outside with very long lenses, and I thought: 'Urgh, today’s the day it’s happened. My goodness.'

“So she [Ms Watson's mother] went outside to address them and their long lenses, and I snuck out to go the other way.

"And it turned out the men with the long lenses were actually not there for me at all.

"They were there for a very, very rare bird, which is called a red kite, and they were trying to basically break into my back garden because they thought that one of these red kites was in our backyard."

Ms Watson added that she allowed the birdwatchers into her garden so they could try to take pictures of the rare bird.

"Conservationists have managed to bring them [red kites] back," she said.
