Police will monitor people's faces while looking for suspects in Oxford city centre today as it brings back its live facial recognition.

Thames Valley Police had arrested three people using the new technology attached to a marked van parked in Cornmarket Street one day in December.

More than 34,000 faces were picked up by the camera fitted to the top of the van, but police say that the data is automatically wiped out so long as you're not wanted by them.

And the force must have the person's mugshot on file in order for him or her to be recognised before an officer comes and arrests you for an alleged crime.

Officers will be in the city centre with the live facial recognition camera at an undisclosed specific location during the day.

Head of crime and intelligence at Thames Valley Police, detective chief superintendent Craig Kirby, said there has been "great success" from the technology.

“The launch of this technology here in the Thames Valley gives us an additional tactic to quickly locate people of interest, arrest outstanding suspects and safeguard high risk missing people," he said.

However, the human rights group Liberty has criticised the cameras, saying the use of facial recognition cameras is "dangerous" while calling for people's protection to be honoured.

The cameras are funded by the Home Office and are being used in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
