The most expensive pint of real ale in Oxford is now priced at £7, according to beer experts.

The Oxford branch of real ale group CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) has been conducting a survey of pubs in the city to find out the price of a pint and where the most expensive real ales are being sold.

And they found the Turf Tavern, which is one of the city's most popular pubs with tourists, was the most expensive for real ale.

Oxford CAMRA spokesman Dave Richardson said: "The Turf Tavern was selling a pint of real ale brewed by the Chadlington Brewery for just over £7 at £7.05.

"It's the first time we have seen a pint of real ale selling for more than £7 in Oxford, and I think that sort of price could make people visit the pub less often or choose to drink at home instead.

"Our survey only looked at real ales so it's quite likely that some premium keg beers are costing even more.

"We have seen £6 pints of real ale before but not pints costing £7. Perhaps there will be some help for the pubs industry in the budget."

The full results of Oxford CAMRA's survey are expected on Friday.

The Turf Tavern, in Bath Place off Holywell Street, is run by Greene King and is one of the most popular pubs with tourists in the city.

Chadlington Brewery in West Oxfordshire produces beers including Oxford IPA and Oxford Blue.

When the survey was conducted by Oxford CAMRA last year, the most expensive pint was £6.55 for a Fuller’s seasonal ale in the Head of the River, followed by £6.45 at the Turf Tavern for a Greene King special beer.

The lowest costing pint outside Wetherspoon pubs was £3.80 in the White Rabbit but the number of pubs where you could not get a pint for under £5 had increased from six to 12.

In 2024, prices at the Swan & Castle and Four Candles were actually down on 2023 with all at £2.49 a pint, except for Greene King IPA at £1.99.
