An Oxford educated star has weighed into a debate about a controversial jeans ad featuring Sydney Sweeney.

Earlier this year a new advert for American Eagle sparked a backlash with some commentators for its slogan “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”.

Critics were unhappy with the advert’s jeans pun which referenced the blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman's genetics.

Following that, in the wake of the social media storm, Donald Trump backed the actress, well-known for her role in television series Euphoria.

On Truth Social, he said: "Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the hottest ad out there. Go get 'em Sydney."

Several months later, in a recent GQ interview promoting her new film ‘Christy’ – about a female boxer – she was asked about the criticism of the ad.

The 28-year-old said: “I did a jeans ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear is jeans.”

She went on to call President Trump’s reaction to it “surreal” and was then challenged on the undertones of the wordplay some have claimed it has.

“I think that when I have an issue, I want to speak about people will hear," Ms Sweeney said.

The interview reignited the debate about the advert with several celebrities making their feelings known.

One of those was Aimee Lou Wood, who took a foundation course at the Oxford School of Drama, which is 10 miles north of the city.

The star of Netflix comedy Sex Education and HBO series The White Lotus reportedly posted a vomiting emoji in response to a clip from GQ’s interview with Ms Sweeney.

Former Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens is among the others who have also reportedly shared criticism on social media.
