James May has joked about a new TV show idea which would see him reunite with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

The presenter worked alongside his two friends for over two decades on the popular motoring shows, Top Gear and The Grand Tour.

One final special, The Grand Tour: One For The Road, released on Prime Video and brought an end to the trio's professional collaborations.

Speaking to the Oxford Mail in the summer, Mr Hammond joked about reuniting with his co-presenters for a special TV show.

He said he would set up a three-a-side football team and "take on the world".

Now, in another Oxford Mail exclusive chat, Mr May answered the same question, lambasting the idea of a sports team.

“I’m really un-sporty, in fact, we’re all really un-sporty, so I’m surprised Hammond said that,” he quipped.

“We’d make an absolutely terrible football team

“In fact, we did try it once on one of the specials, and we were substituted very quickly from the crew team."

After pondering the question, Mr May settled on running a pub as a trio, with each presenter having their own role at the theoretical boozer.

The 62-year-old co-owns The Royal Oak in Swallowcliffe, Wiltshire, while Mr Clarkson opened The Farmer's Dog in Asthall near Burford in August of last year.

“I think the three of us would run a pub as Jeremy and I had always talked about in the olden days," Mr May revealed.

"We always concluded that our pub would have nobody in it because we’d end up just running it as a club for ourselves.

A brief history of Top Gear

“I think the three of us would run a pub as Jeremy and I had always talked about in the olden days, but we always concluded that our pub would have nobody in it because we’d end up just running it as a club for ourselves.

“Now, of course, much later on, we did both end up owning pubs, and the reality is very different; you can’t really do that.

“Would it be interesting to see the three of us running a pub? Who would do what? Hammond would have to be front of house, I’d probably have to do cooking, and then Clarkson would have to do PR and waiting. I think he’d have to be a waiter.”

When asked if Mr Clarkson would make a good waiter, Mr May responded: “No, but I don’t think I’d make a very good chef either!”

The TV star was speaking to the Oxford Mail ahead of his Explorers - The Age of Discovery Tour live show at the New Theatre in Oxford on Tuesday, October 21.
