Two brothers were in tears in the dock as they were spared them an immediate prison sentence after a 'brazen act of lawlessness'.

Gabriel and Claudiu Dubovici, both of Cardigan Street, Luton, admitted to stealing 31 parcels from an Amazon van in Ascott-under-Wychwood.

The pair, aged 29 and 23, were sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on October 8.

They previously pleaded not guilty to a robbery charge, but guilty to a theft charge which was accepted by the prosecution.

The court heard that the pair who are Romanian nationals, along with a third man, stole parcels worth £8,390.39 belonging to Amazon.

The court was told that the delivery driver was working on July 21 this year and had around 31 packages of high-value goods.

He left Chipping Norton and was being followed by a grey car, heading towards Ascott-under-Wychwood.

The driver parked up, and the three men started to take the items and load them into their car. He felt threatened and took photos of the incident.

The court was shown the photos, one of which showed a man in a red balaclava exiting the grey car.

The court heard that the van wasn't a marked Amazon van. The items stolen included air pods, watches, mobile phones and tablets.

The mitigation for Gabriel Dubovici was that he fully accepted his role in the theft. The court was told he grew up in a poor area of Romania and moved to the UK in 2014.

He was described as an 'extremely hard-working man', who works for a car wash. However he was also described as 'child-like and simplistic'.

Gordana Austin, mitigating for Claudiu Dubovici, told the court he had moved to the UK to live with his brothers in 2021.

Ms Austin said: "He accepts the offending fully, but that he didn't push the complainant.

"He is a young man who is somewhat easily led. He didn't consider the consequences of the offending.

"He has never been in trouble before. He has a realistic prospect of rehabilitation."

Sentencing the two men, Mr Recorder Alex Young said: "This is a serious count of offending. You had the good sense to plead guilty.

"It was a brazen act of lawlessness. It's plain that what happened resulted from some inside knowledge from your group. You decided to try and get rich quick."

For Gabriel Dubovici, the Judge handed him an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

He was also given a four-month curfew to be electronically tagged between 7pm and 8am. He must also complete 240 hours of unpaid work within 12 months.

Claudiu Dubovici was given a 15-month prison sentence, suspended for two years with a three-month curfew for the same hours.

He must also complete 200 hours of unpaid work within 12 months.

Both men were also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £600 within 12 months.
