Police have staged a crack down on commercial vehicles breaking the law.

Traffic police were in Bicester on Thursday looking out for vehicles, which includes vans and lorries, that are "endangering other road users" by failing to maintain standards.

"Today, we stopped a range of vehicles from car derived vans to 32 tonne heavy goods vehicles," a police spokesman said.

In total, 54 vehicles were stopped: 18 of these had no problems but 36 had committed an offence in some form, police said.

Nineteen vehicles were prohibited, six were uninsured and two drivers were arrested for providing a positive drugs wipe - they await the lab results.

Eight vehicles had insecure loads on the back, 11 were overweight - one of which was by 38 per cent over - and five were seized.

What's more, four vehicles had defective tyres, four had defective lights (one of which had five separate defective lights) and five had excessive window tint.

The law says that vehicles first registered after 1985 must let at least 75 per cent of light through the front windows and side windows must let at least 70 per cent through.

As well as this, three vehicles had illegal number plates, two vehicles were being driven by drivers using a mobile phone and two vehicles had occupants without seat belts.

Please be safe on the roads.
