A world champion swing dancer will lead a class in Oxford next week.

Bobby White, a World Balboa Champion, and his partner Jessica White, both from the US, will teach the class to support the growing balboa scene in Oxford.

Mr White, who has taught swing around the world for almost two decades, will lead a session on September 8, introducing dancers to the balboa style.

Anne Willcocks from Oxford Balboa said: "What is fabulous about balboa is the connection it demands between dancers.

"It’s like a grand conversation at lightning speed – in touch with the music.

"I call it secret dancing as it doesn't look as flash as many other dances: but it feels amazing and it just puts a huge smile on your face."

Oxford Balboa was established in 2022 as a not-for-profit group to promote the style.

Balboa is a close-hold swing dance that originated in California during the early 20th century.

It is danced in couples who work together in close connection, creating fluid spins, turns, and rhythmic tricks, with lots of slides, swivels, swoops, and shuffles.

A second world-class balboa dance couple, Blake Thiessen and Grace Babbes from California, will also teach a workshop in Oxford later in September as part of their world tour.

The Oxford scene mirrors a worldwide revival in the US, Europe, and the Far East.
