A project to give people with disabilities greater access to the River Thames has been successfully completed in an Oxfordshire town.

Construction has finished on an accessible boat mooring in Wallingford with a new slipway and jetty making the waterway available for everyone to use.

Work began in October last year to install the moorings, with plans drawn up in collaboration with Wallingford Accessible Boat Club.

Sharing the news online, Councillor Steve Holder wrote: "The brand new accessible moorings are now in place - and they look amazing!

"This another brilliant example of what can be achieved by working in partnership to meet the needs of our community."

A grand opening of the new facility will be held on May 15.

More than £200,000 was invested by South Oxfordshire District council to make the riverside in Wallingford more accessible.

Alongside the work on the accessible moorings, another related project will be providing a new accessible club cabin, with access to water and electricity for use by Wallingford Accessible Boat Club.

The moorings are specifically designed to meet the requirements of the Wallingford Accessible Boat Club’s wheelyboat, WOW-one, to enable disabled and less mobile people to have equal access to the river.

Cllr Holder added: "I’m really looking forward to seeing these moorings make a difference for those who need improved access to the river.

"Let’s make the Thames more inclusive for everyone!"
