Rooftop-based Six by Nico is on its third menu rotation and this time its ‘guilty pleasures’.
Everyone’s guilty pleasures are different when it comes to food but this six-course menu attempts to encapsulate the go-to options that you know may not be the healthiest of options but still can’t get enough of.
If you’re feeling really hungry and you're a baked bean fan then the ‘cheesy beano’ croquettes are a good way to wet your appetite for what is to come.
Now for the main event and course one is a twist on a breakfast muffin featuring well-seasoned Italian sausage salsiccia in a crispy exterior with cheddar shavings and a flavourful truffle emulsion.
The egg yolk jam is the standout, though more of it would elevate the dish. Portion size is modest. Overall, a delightful bite.
Notably the first two courses are smaller and lighter in volume with course two a deconstructed loaded potato skin.
A flavorful Lyonnaise potato terrine is paired with rich smoked bacon jam and airy whipped crème fraîche.
The chive emulsion adds a fresh touch. A creative and tasty take.
Course three offers a choice between two options the cheeseburger or mac’n’cheese.
The cheeseburger comes as aged beef tartare with house burger sauce, dill pickle, and a crispy beer-battered cornichon.
If you are not a fan of tartare then definitely go for the grilled mac’n’cheese, which is a favourite guilty pleasure of mine so it’s a shame both don’t feature on the same menu.
It comes with cauliflower Couscous adding a surprising contrast while the jalapeno gherkin ketchup adds a kick.
Next up is the fish finger butty which again comes in all its separated parts. A piece of coalfish at the centre was perfectly flaky, and the salt and vinegar hash brown reminisced of the nostalgic chip shop tastes.
The smoked tomato caviar and toasted brioche polonaise transform a simple fish finger sandwich into a refined experience.
And the final savoury offering is perhaps the one that failed to live up to expectations with course five named Nico fried chicken.
A piece of chicken thigh with a crumb but at the first glimpse of the menu I was hoping for an actual deep fried chicken. Give me gourmet KFC!
For dessert and the last course of the night is cookie dough. The holy grail of guilty pleasure desserts and it doesn’t disappoint.
A colourful dish with a bright pink cookie topped with raspberries served next to a simple but decadent vanilla espuma with chunks of gooey hazelnut and chocolate cookie buried inside.
An entirely vegetarian alternative is also available with dishes including veggie bologna as a substitute to the fish finger butty and instead of fried celeriac instead of fried chicken.
The breakfast muffin and loaded potato skins are also slightly tweaked to make it vegetarian-friendly.
For the full six-course tasting menu, it will set you back £50 per person, with matching wine pairings at £38 each.
The menu will be available at Six by Nico at the top of the Westgate Centre until September 1, breaking its usual six-weekly menu cycle.
Afterwards this, the restaurant will continue this theme and present another three-week menu following a trip to Tokyo.
It will include dishes inspired by chicken karaage to our take on the classic ramen
