In September and through October and November, the gardens cared for by the National Trust are filled with the colours of late summer, followed by the reds and oranges of autumn.
Greys Court's walled garden, near Henley, which features a series of outdoor rooms discovered by passing through gates and doors in ancient brick walls, is one option.
The parterres at Cliveden, Waddesdon, in Buckinghamshire and Hughenden, also in Buckinghamshire, with their intricate geometric designs, will last well into September.
As part of England's largest history and culture festival, Heritage Open Days, several National Trust properties will throw open their gates for free entry on select days between September 6 and 15.
A guided walk at Hughenden or a glimpse into the film history at Basildon Park, near Goring, are some of the opportunities on offer.
Pride & Prejudice, Bridgerton and Downton Abbey have all been filmed at the park.
A new initiative from National Trust and Forthglade, Pooch Passport, allows dog owners to collect stamps at participating locations throughout England and Wales for dog treats, starting from September 1.

Half term trails will begin from October 25, with educational and fun activities for children involving nature exploration and interactive storytelling at various locations such as Hughenden, Basildon Park and Stowe Gardens.
There will also be trails at Greys Court, Clivenden and Buscot and Coleshill Estates.
These will include a trail on Aesops Fables, with challenges along the way and storytelling sessions, and an animal tracking trail.
