A new express bus service has been announced to help get commuters into Oxford on time.

Stagecoach West will introduce four trips a day in each direction between Oxford and Carterton from Monday June 3.

On Monday to Friday the services will leave Carterton at 6:50. 7:50, 17:55 and 18:55 and buses will leave Oxford city centre at 06:15, 07:15, 17:15 and 18:15.

The S2X will begin at Stanmore Crescent moving on to Carterton Crossroads, The Evenlode in Eynsham and South Parade in Summertown.

All stops are served as far as Oxford North, after which the service operates on a limited stop basis to Magdalen Street in Oxford city centre.

The new S2X bypasses Witney and Eynsham, running directly along the A40.

This will provide an express alternative to the S1 (currently on diversion via Woodstock Road due to the Botley Road closure) and S2.

The times of the service were developed following a public survey undertaken by Carterton Town Council to establish the optimum service times to meet demand.

Karen Coventry, commercial and marketing director, Stagecoach West, said: "These four new daily weekday journeys will make travelling in and out of Oxford city centre easier for residents in and around Carterton, once again making bus the go-to, sustainable and cost -effective choice for commuters in the county.”

This new service will be funded by central government through Oxfordshire’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.

Councillor Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for Transport Management, said: “I’m really delighted to be able to back our commitment to high-quality public transport with real delivery and budget, in rural areas as well as our larger towns.

“Not everyone has access to a car and so public transport is essential to help people get around for work, shopping, and socialising.

"We know there is a demand for bus services here in Carterton, which can’t be met by the commercial operators, and we are glad to be able to help fill this gap.”

Meanwhile Oxford Tube has also made some minor adjustments to its weekday timetable to reduce waiting times for passengers.

From Monday June 3, the new schedule will ensure journey lengths and arrival times are as accurate as possible.

There will also be a slight change in frequency Monday to Friday – Oxford to London (from 14:00 - 15:00) will run every 15 minutes and London to Oxford (from 17:07 – 17:55) will run every 12 minutes.

Weekend journeys remain unchanged.
