Oxford City Council has congratulated the U's after promotion to the Championship this afternoon.

Des Buckingham’s Oxford United beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 in the League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium with Josh Murphy scoring both goals in the first half.

It will be the first time United will play in the second tier of English football for 25 years.

Leader of Oxford City Council, Susan Brown said: "What a result, and congratulations to the Yellows for their promotion to the Championship.

“It's been 25 years since they last played in the second tier and there have been some very dark days along the way, which makes today all the sweeter.

"Enjoy your celebrations, and I look forward to seeing the team back in Oxford with their trophy.

"This is your day - well done, you Yellows!"
