Labour has taken control of Banbury Town Council for the first time in the town's history.

The party gained 10 seats as it more than doubled its numbers - having previously had nine.

The Conservatives were reduced to three seats, while the Liberal Democrats gained a seat, and no independent candidate won a seat.

A new Mayor of Banbury will be appointed on May 14, when the group will formally take control of the town council, following the current mayor, Fiaz Ahmed, losing his seat.

Eddie Reeves, Leader of the Conservatives on Oxfordshire County Council, also lost his seat.

Shaida Hussain, Labour group leader on Banbury Town Council said: “I’m so grateful to the people of Banbury for supporting Labour.

“Now the hard work begins to repay the trust the people of Banbury have placed in our party.

"We will do our utmost to bring new ideas to improve our town, and deliver the fresh start Banbury needs."

Sean Woodcock, Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Banbury Constituency said: “Gaining control of Banbury Town Council is a historic achievement for Labour.

"Combined with other results across the constituency, in Banbury, Chipping Norton and places like Deddington and Charlbury & Finstock where we increased our vote, it is clear that Labour is firmly established as the party that can beat the Conservatives at the upcoming general election”
