Plans for new homes have been rejected because of the scheme's 'isolation' and design flaws.

Elivia Homes applied to build 37 homes, including affordable homes, on land at Pearith Farm, Appleford Road in north-east Didcot.

But South Oxfordshire District Council said the proposed development did not provide good transport links and residents would be "wholly reliant on the private car".

It also said the south western corner of the site 'did not represent a high quality of design' and would be dominated by hardstanding, parking and other structures with insufficient space for landscaping and bin storage.

"This will create a poor outlook and environment for residents living in this part of the site," said the planning committee.

The proposed apartment block was too big and the high number of four-bed-plus units and lack of smaller ones did not deliver the kind of affordable housing the district needs.

The affordable homes were also "clearly distinguishable from the market units" which was against council policy.

The quantity and quality of open space would not meet the needs of residents and there was insufficient evidence that access to and within the site would be safe and convenient, said the council.

The site forms part of a wider area allocated for housing in the South Oxfordshire Local Plan 2035 and would eventually be enveloped.

Didcot Town Council's planning committee also objected and said the scheme "seems out of phase".
