Concerns are being raised that removal of a city bus stop may prevent elderly people from being able to travel to the hospital.

Marston Labour councillor Mary Clarkson has said she is worried people in her ward who regularly use the Ferry Pool Road bus stop in Summertown could struggle, despite there being another stop 100 yards away.

This comes as Oxfordshire County Council put up a sign saying it is "considering the removal of this bus stop" and that anyone who wishes to comment on the suggestion has until May 31 to do so.

Ms Clarkson said: "People can say well we shouldn't have stops too close together - but are the stops well-used?

"There might be a good reason for having them close together.

"Doing this at precisely the time when the county is going to restrict private cars along there seems a lot of nonsense.

"For most of us 100 yards isn’t that far but if you’re elderly it’s significantly further."

County highways chief Andrew Gant has confirmed views are being sought on removal of the bus stop after residents had "contacted the council" partly due to the pavement "being too narrow".

Mr Gant added: "Local residents have contacted their councillors to say there is an issue with that particular bus stop.

"We're simply asking for views.

"It's not my opinion.

"This is simply because residents have contacted us to ask us to look into it - that's what we're doing."

On the comments made by Ms Clarkson in relation to "restricting private cars", the Liberal Democrat Mr Gant had said in a public post "the city council fully supports the traffic filters trial, which will hugely improve bus services - indeed already are".

If the Ferry Pool Road stop is removed, the next closest "appropriate" one will be at Cherwell School.

Ms Clarkson said in a social media post: "Why remove a bus stop well used by Marston & Northway residents visiting shops and GPs and North Oxford residents going to Oxford hospitals.

"We should be making bus travel easier now that county are restricting cars on Marston Ferry Road. Please join me in writing to oppose this move."

Summertown ward councillor Tom Landell Mills, has also offered his thoughts.

The Liberal Democrat said: "Has the county council offered to buy a little bit of the garden to widen the footpath as this is a nice, sensible location for the bus stop?

"The county council should ask the private land owner if they would consider selling a small strip.

"That's the obvious remedy.

"It wouldn't cost that much."

One twitter commenter, Danny Yee, said in response to the post from Ms Clarkson: "Do you really think there should be a bus stop every hundred metres, or even every two hundred metres?"
