A first aid charity has celebrated the opening of its new cadet unit in Botley.

On April 16, young people and their parents were welcomed to St Peter's and St Paul’s Church to learn about the opportunities offered through the St John Ambulance Cadet programme.

Area manager Paul Monaghan started the evening by introducing the charity and the youth programme.

Attendees were given the opportunity to get hands on and engage with several stands hosted by volunteers.

These covered a range of subjects including CPR, radios, slings and the recovery position.

Volunteers from across the Thames Valley district were also on hand to welcome guests and answer questions

Cadets, aged between 10 and 17, are the youngest volunteers of St John Ambulance.

They learn lifesaving skills and take part in activities that help them to earn the Grand Prior Award - the highest recognition for a cadet in St John Ambulance.

Thames Valley Cadet of the Year, Ethan Ritchie, who is in his 11th year with St John Ambulance, was also at the event.

He said: "I really like the event availability and opportunities you get as a cadet.

"The life experiences you gain are really invaluable, and it’s really rewarding to give back to the community."
