A search for a man who fell into the River Thames in Oxford continues into its second week.

The river search began after multiple reports that a man in his 60s fell into the river on East Street in Osney Mead last week (Tuesday, April 9).

Members of the public had initially tried to help the man who was wearing a flat cap after he had entered the water but they were unable to drag him to safety.

Emergency services including police, fire and rescue and paramedics all raced to Osney, near Botley Road, at around 1.20pm.

Shortly after the search, Thames Valley Police received reports of a missing person who matched the description of the man seen to enter the water.

The force has said there is no evidence the man came out of the water and it is believed the man reported missing is the person who fell in.

Local policing area commander for Oxford, Superintendent Bruce Riddell, said: “Our searches are ongoing regarding a man who went into the water on Tuesday, April 9 and our activity continues to be guided by current water conditions.

“Updates and support are being provided to the family of a missing man. We remain as confident as we can be at this time that this is the man who went into the water.

“Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.”
