An Oxfordshire politician who was suspended for a "far-right" retweet has been nominated for a "new" position, drawing criticism from objectors.

Conservative county councillor Kevin Bulmer, who represents Goring, retweeted a post from the Britain First party which referred to an “Islamist squatter”, who it said wanted to “invade us and replace our culture with savagery”.

He was suspended from the Conservative group following the retweet in March, with leader Eddie Reeves saying an investigation was "under way".

The councillor was also criticised in February 2023 after he aimed an outspoken social media post at the Church of England calling them "woke muppets" and "t***s" regarding reforms around gendered language.

But since then Mr Bulmer has been nominated for a place on the pension fund committee.

Mr Reeves says suggestions of a "new" role from councillors are misleading as Mr Bulmer has served as deputy chairman of the council’s pensions committee for "several years".

Liberal Democrat cabinet member for community and corporate services, Neil Fawcett, said: "I was pleasantly surprised that councillor Reeves had decided to suspend councillor Bulmer.

"I was surprised then to see councillor Bulmer taking a committee place due to the Conservative Independent Alliance (CIA).

"It was a pretty horrendous and nasty retweet.

"But then presumably councillor Reeves thought he was a suitable person to be an elected member of the CIA group."

Council leader Liz Leffman also queried the nomination as did Green councillor Ian Middleton who said it would be "useful to have some clarity from councillor Reeves".

Mr Reeves did not offer a response.

Mr Bulmer said in March he had shared the post, which he has now deleted, in error.

He added: "I had no knowledge of the organisation in question when reposting its original comment.

"I have since removed the post and I hope that the party will accept my unwitting mistake and conclude its investigation promptly."
