Police have said there is "still no evidence" that the man who fell into the River Thames in Oxford came out of the water.

The river search continues into its third day after multiple reports that a man in his 60s fell into the river on East Street in Osney Mead on Tuesday afternoon (April 9).

Emergency services including police, fire and rescue and paramedics all raced to Osney, near Botley Road, at around 1.20pm.

Shortly after the search, Thames Valley Police received reports of a missing person who matched the description of the man seen to enter the water.

Today (Thursday, April 10) the force has said it is confident the man who went into the water is the man who was reported missing.

“We are utilising specialist search police resources, with assistance from the Joint Operations Marine Unit and Oxfordshire Search and Rescue.

“Our search activity is guided by the Environment Agency advice around current water conditions.

“Following further investigation work we are as confident as we can be that the man who went into the water is the man who was reported missing to us.

Thames Valley Police also revealed yesterday (Wednesday, April 10) that members of the public had initially tried to help the man after he had entered the water.

“I would like to thank all of the members of the public who called us yesterday and tried to assist the man in the water," a spokesman said.

“If anyone has information we would ask them to call 101 quoting the reference 43240161677.”

Nearby businesses on and near East Street have been asked by Thames Valley Police to share any footage they have from Tuesday afternoon.

“All I know is that the police contacted us because we have a CCTV camera but I didn’t know anything about the circumstances or what happened,” said a worker at The Vishuddha Centre in East Street.

Locals reacted in horror on Tuesday afternoon as it became apparent what had happened.

“We saw the fire engine race past us and heard that a man had fallen into the river which is awful,” said one dog walker.

“The sirens were so loud around here.”

Another member of the public who was walking close to the river said: “I have no idea what has happened but there are so many police officers and firefighters."

Thames Valley Police said it could not disclose the man's name.
