The deadline to apply for an award which recognises Oxfordshire's future engineering talents has been extended.

The annual High Sheriff Young Engineer Awards are held to identify and recognise Oxfordshire's promising engineering, resistant materials and design technology students.

The awards are inviting nominations from Oxfordshire state schools by May 8, after the deadline was extended from April 5.

The awards ceremony is set to take place at Abingdon and Witney College on June 24 in association with The Engineering Trust.

Each category's winner will receive a £400 voucher.

The school or college with the winning student will get £1,000.

The first runner up in each category will be awarded a £200 voucher, while the second runner up will pocket a £100 voucher.

The winning team members will also get to share an £800 voucher.

The top three students for each award category, along with their parents and teachers, will be invited to attend the ceremony.

Executive chairman at Lucy Group and head of the judging panel, Richard Dick, said: "Young talent is critical to British industry, yet there is a scarcity of engineers, especially those with a digital understanding.

"This awards scheme is intended to enthuse science, technology, engineering and maths students and encourage them to consider a rewarding career in engineering."
