An outdoor swimming pool has reopened after being closed for the off-season.

Hinksey Outdoor Pool opened yesterday (Monday April 8) with councillors among the many taking a dip.

City council housing chief Linda Smith and Chewe Munkonge, cabinet member for Leisure and Parks, were among "so many other people enjoying a free balmy 28 degrees warm swim" at the pools yesterday afternoon.

New operators More Community Leisure Trust is offering free lane swims every morning between 7.30am and 12.30pm this week.

However, due to the current low temperature of the pool, around 16 degrees, these sessions are for swimmers aged over 16 only.

There is no need to book ahead and swimmers can just turn up.

More Leisure Community Trust (MLCT) took over the operation of Barton Leisure Centre, Ferry Leisure Centre, the Leys Pools & Leisure Centre, Hinksey Outdoor Pool, and Oxford Ice Rink on behalf of the city council in March.

The independent, not for profit charitable organisation, which partners with Serco Leisure, took over from Fusion Lifestyle.

Last year the lido did not open until June as wet weather in March delayed the installation a new pool liner as part of a £132,000 upgrade.

It was hoped the work would be completed and ready for an opening at the end of April.
