A man has been charged and named by police after a city centre nightclub fire in Oxford.

The incident occurred when a bin near Frewin Court and Cornmarket Street was allegedly set alight at around 10.45pm on Wednesday night (April 3). 

This fire then spread to a neighbouring property, which was formerly the Cellar nightclub with Thames Valley Police then arresting a 37-year-old man on suspicion of arson.

The force has now named the man as Michael Corcoran of Walton Street and charged him with three offences including a drugs charge.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley police said: “Michael Corcoran, aged 37, of Walton Street, Oxford, has been charged with arson with intent to endanger life, arson with recklessness to endanger life, and possession of a class B drug, cannabis.

“He was due to appear at Oxford Magistrates’ Court yesterday.”

Police returned to the scene on Thursday alongside a fire engine and an ambulance after a medical incident happened nearby the scene.

The fire which started on Wednesday night was viewed by a crowd of people in the city centre who saw “high flames” coming from the area.

An eyewitness to the blaze said: “Around 10.45pm on my way home from work, I witnessed quite a big fire, just off Cornmarket Street, down Frewin Court.

“The flames were quite high, with crowds gathering to watch before fire crews arrived and police cordoned off the area.”
