Highways England warned drivers of the delays advising them to "allow extra travel time".

Eyewitness Debbie Byrne, who is among those on the motorway, said: "We're stuck in the traffic which is slowly moving. I hope those involved are not too seriously hurt."

This has affected the timing of Oxford’s fleet of airline buses headed to airports leading to Oxford Bus Company warning those catching flights.

An Oxford Bus Company spokesperson said: "Due to a major incident near the Lewknor Turn, our Airline services are operating with a significant delay of up to 60 minutes.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience during this time."
