A cairn terrier from Bicester will be showcasing her skills at Crufts Dog Show later this month.

Ava is being trained by Jennie Fairweather, a dog training instructor who has run Fairweather dog training club in Bicester for more than 20 years.

The Hooperholics Hoopers Display Team is set to do two sessions at the dog show in The Good Citizen Dog Scheme Activities arena at 1pm and 4pm on Saturday, March 9.

Ava, a member of Hooperholics Hoopers Display Team, got into the training when she was two years old.

The cairn terrier will also participate in the Hooperholics Temptation Ally Team competition.

The display team could potentially feature on television, showing a Channel 4 TV presenter the ropes of Hoopers and inviting the presenter to run with one of the team dogs.

Ms Fairweather got Ava when the cairn terrier was only 18 weeks old from a close friend.

Currently aged five and a half, Ava has shown an excellent ability for learning and a sternness throughout her sporting journey.

At just one year old, Ava sailed through her Bronze Award for the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme, showcasing her basic obedience skills.

She also trains for Mantrailing, an activity that involves hunting for 'lost' people. So far, Ava has reached level two in her training.

Alongside Mantrailing, Ava competes in Scent or Nose Work, where she is trained to discover a hidden odour, which is either that of cloves to gun oil, hidden anywhere from a building to a luggage bag.

She is currently learning how to search people by detecting the gun oil odour, hidden on a person in a group.

Ms Fairweather said she and Ava enjoy Rally (obedience) and have had some success at the event shows at level one.

The duo also recently tried their hand at Heel Work To Music, securing an eighth position out of 19 entries.

Ava can now perform 30 different tricks in synch with music selected by Ms Fairweather.

Ms Fairweather said it gives Ava "a 'job' to do", which encourages her to use her brain and problems solve without her trainer always directing her.

It also ensures that Ava doesn't get into trouble out of boredom.

Crufts is set to take place at the NEC in Birmingham, with Ava competing on Saturday, March 9.

The show is the largest of its kind in the world and will run from March 7 to March 10.

The show's organisers are expecting to welcome more than 24,000 dogs over the four days.
