Green travel, new medical provision, cycle and walking friendly developments are some of the key issues up for review in Wallingford's new Neighbourhood plan.

Town councillors are urging residents to take part in the consultation for the town's neighbourhood plan, which launched Saturday, February 3 and runs through Saturday March 16.

The consultation gives people the opportunity comment and have their say on the Neighbourhood Plan prepared by the town council.

To take part in the online survey see the Wallingford Town Council website.

It aims to provide a planning tool to guide the long-term future of the town and its countryside for the period from 2019 to 2035.

Katharine Keats-Rohan, district councillor for Wallingford, said: “Many issues are explored in the plan, we’re very environmentally conscious for example; new developments need to be walking and cycling friendly.

“We’re encouraging of electric vehicles and charging points and are also allocating space on new Winterbrook Meadows site for new medical practice as the current site is too small.”

The consultation allows residents to set out what changes they consider necessary to make the plan able to proceed and whether they believe it requires a public hearing.

Mayor for Wallingford councillor Dan Beauchamp said: “It looks at the whole town in many different aspects, with a certain level of strength for local decisions and interests – planning is a key example.

"The planning team at South Oxfordshire District Council has to take this into account.

“We’ve spent a lot of time developing this plan. It’s the product of several years hard work from the steering group.

“A consultation phase allows us to ensure it’s relevant and up to date, whether that be regarding new buildings, population growth – things are always changing.”

At the end of the consultation period all comments received will be collated by the town council’s WNP working group. A consultation summary will be published showing the comments received and the Working Group’s responses.

The plan sets out eight themes “that have been developed following extensive consultation with our community”.

These are: a strategy for Wallingford, housing, design, character assessment, historic built environment and archaeology, natural environment, employment and economy, town centre, retail and tourism, movement and connectivity and community facilities and infrastructure.

The town council website states a policy to designate three local green spaces at Radnor Road, Wilding Road and The Paddocks, for public recreation and to enhance biodiversity has been fulfilled. This designation also protects these Local Green Spaces from development.

The survey can be accessed via the town council’s website, with paper copies available in the town information centre.

Ms Keats-Rohan added: “Residents are encouraged to have their say as it’s their opportunity to shape what happens here. It’s very important to get involved with.”
