AN independent cinema projectionist has accused a customer of harassing her after he ‘loitered’ outside the venue for days, a court has heard.

Catalin-eonud Pelinescue is on trial at Oxford Crown Court charged with one count of stalking between June 8, 2021, and September 11, 2021.

The 41-year-old is accused of harassing a projectionist who worked at The Ultimate Picture Palace in Cowley Road, Oxford.

A jury heard on Tuesday (January 30) that he allegedly engaged in ‘obsessive conversation’ with the woman, named Martina Barley, as well as inviting her to watch films, waiting for her outside the venue, and asking other staff members after her.

Pelinescue has denied the offence and appeared in the dock wearing a colourful spotty shirt.

Opening the case, barrister Jonathan Stone said Pelinsecue first met Miss Barley on June 8 after he attended the independent cinema and asked her for a ‘selfie’

He then added her as a friend on Facebook to send her the photograph. Before it appeared he ‘loitered outside’ the cinema for about three days.

Mr Stone said: “On June 13, he came up to her while she was in the ticket booth and tried to evade her personal space and made obsessive conversation with her including trying to get student discount.

“She said he was looking her body up and down.”

Pelinescue then reportedly invited Miss Barley to watch a film and asked if he could park his bike at her home, making her ‘very uncomfortable’.

He was accused of then lingering around after watching a film so he was the last customer in the venue.

Miss Barley then went on holiday and thought the issue was resolved but on September 4, the defendant was sat on a bench outside the cinema and shouted ‘good evening’ towards her, causing her to have a panic attack.

He went inside the cinema and started allegedly asking several questions until she asked him to leave.

Pelinescue was then sent a letter two days later from the venue banning him from returning after Miss Barley reported her concerns to her manager and the police, commenting that he was ‘fixated on her’.

The defendant was then arrested and interviewed in the December.

He told police he had visited the venue on ‘numerous occasions’ because he ‘likes going to the cinema’ and that he often sits on the bench outside because it’s ‘his favourite’.

Mr Stone said: “He denied going every day to see Miss Barley and he told police he didn’t believe his behaviour was harassing in anyway.”

The trial continues.
