AN alleged victim of child sex abuse at the hands of a Witney pensioner confided in her mother twice but was told it ‘didn’t matter,’ a court has heard.

Roy Summers has denied 17 counts of historic child sex abuse, including two counts of rape, at the start of his trial at Oxford Crown Court.

Prosecutor Charles Ward-Jackson told a jury that the 80-year-old had sexually assaulted three girls, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The assaults were said to have taken place at his address in Springfield Oval, Witney, as well as his car and a shed. The court heard the ages ranged from four to 13 years old.

On Wednesday (January 24), the jury heard from the second girl accusing Summers of abuse. She said incidents had allegedly occurred in his house, his garden shed and occasionally on a bus where he worked as a driver.

She said Summers would teach her how to drive the vehicle but would allegedly come up behind her and ‘squeeze her breasts’.

On other occasions, she claimed Summers had touched her inappropriately in her genital area including one summer where she was wearing a swimsuit in the back garden.

The jury heard that the girl had confided in her mother twice about the alleged incidents but was told she could not report it to the police.

“I was told it didn’t matter,” she said. “I was told it was irrelevant. I started doubting myself. I was told at 11 years old it didn’t matter and it wasn’t a bad thing.

“It completely twisted how I saw those actions. It was really confusing and recalling it now is more confusing as I’ve spent 20 years trying to forget it.”

In cross-examination, it was put to the girl that Summers would not have touched her at the home because adults were present, including her mother, so the bus driver would not have risked being caught.

“You need to understand it wouldn’t have been a room full of adults,” she said. “My mum just didn’t care and wouldn’t have stopped it.

“He had nothing to be scared of, to worry about, she was not an issue. She was not a barrier. She proves that later when I told her and she does nothing about it.”

It was alleged the Summers would give the girl money when she was wearing ‘something he liked’ and say: “You’re beautiful, I like seeing this.”

The girl eventually reported the alleged incidents to police in April 2021.
