“I’M going to kill you, you don’t deserve to live,” a man threatened his wife after she decided to divorce him.

Bekir Akpinar, 63, was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on Friday (January 19) for one count of stalking involving fear of violence between August 1, 2022, and October 14, 2022.

The court heard that he had been threatening his ex-wife of 27 years after she decided to divorce him April 2022.

Akpinar did not take the break-up well and began to make numerous phone calls to ex-partner, threatening her life and threatening to hurt her daughter.

He would also show up at her work, cling to her car door, and wait outside her house day and night.

On one occasion over the phone, he said to her: “I’m going to kill you, you don’t deserve o live. I’m going to drag your daughter into the room and make her scream.”

During the relationship, Akpinar would also control his ex-partner by not letting her see her friends and made her feel ‘stupid’.

Judge Nigel Daly handed him a 20 month jail sentence, suspended for 24 months. He was also made subject to a restraining order.

Reading a victim impact statement to the court, prosecutor Kathy Oliver said Akpinar’s ex-wife was ‘frightened’ of her partner and felt ‘isolated’ from other people.

“I feel so frightened,” she wrote. “He comes every single day and some nights. He holds onto the car door.

“I’m so scared of him that every time I go anywhere I’m constantly looking around. I try to ignore him but he’s persistent.

“I feel so vulnerable and my confidence has been shaken. I told me I was not allowed to do anything.

“He told me all the time that I don’t know how to do anything. He told me to listen to him because he knows best. I felt small and insignificant.

“He didn’t allow me to have friends and I couldn’t do anything without his permission. He isolated me from everyone and made me feel dependant on only him.

“He tried to distance me from my family and made me feel completely alone. I don’t even want to say his name anymore It’s the darkest time of my past.”

Defending Akpinar, of Broughton Road, Banbury, Bethan Chichester said he knows his behaviour was ‘completely unacceptable’ and one-to-one intervention would be welcome.

“He struggled to come to terms with the breakdown in his relationship,” she said.

Judge Daly concluded: “It seems to me his attitude has to change and he has to keep away from his ex-wife.”
