A JUDGE has called a man’s behaviour ‘violent and pathetic’ as he avoided jail by the ‘skin of his teeth’, a court has heard.

Connor Buckley, 27, was in Oxford Crown Court on Thursday (January 18) after assaulting a police officer while he was being arrested on April 2 last year.

Neighbours had called police to the address in Bicester after hearing concerning ‘screaming and shouting’.

Upon arrival, officers found Buckley being ‘very aggressive’ and decided to arrest him.

However, Buckley pushed one of the officers and had to be restrained, resulting in Buckley being charged with one count of assaulting an emergency worker.

No charges were brought on Buckley for the reason the officers were originally called to the property.

Sentencing him to a two-year community order, Judge Michael Gledhill said Buckley had avoided a prison sentence by the ‘skin of his teeth’.

“It’s about time you grew up and took responsibility,” he said. “What sort of impression are you setting for your children when you act in this pathetic and violent manner?

“I appreciate there’s a lot of people who will hear about this sentence and think I should have sent you to prison today but I’m giving you a chance.”

Opening the case, Prosecutor Kathy Oliver said: “When officers arrived they could hear screaming and shouting.

“Connor Buckley was very aggressive to officers and wouldn’t follow any instructions and it was clear he would have to be removed from the premises.

“He was not compliant and wouldn’t do what he was told. When he was told he was going to be arrested he had his hands behind his back and shouted, ‘No’.

“Mr Buckley pushed [the officer] with back with both hands. Mr Buckley then needed to be restrained.”

The court heard that Buckley took ‘full responsibility’ and has ‘a lot of remorse and regret’ about the incident.

It was heard that he has a diagnosis of autism and ADHD and does not like to be touched.

At the time he felt ‘backed into the corner’ and ‘put his hands up on instinct’.

Judge Gledhill also ordered Buckley, of Poppy Close, Ambrosden, Bicester to complete nine rehabilitation activity days and 150 hours of unpaid work.

There were also £475 in court costs and a victim surcharge will apply.

Judge Gledhill concluded: “I’ve been persuaded from what I’ve heard and read today so you’ve avoided going downstairs to the cells by the skin of your teeth.

“It’s not serious violence but when an officer tells you to do something lawfully you do not resist it.”
