An Oxford restaurant has been told that it must improve its hygiene standards following an inspection.

Bodrum at 242 Cowley Road, Oxford, was given a two out of five food hygiene rating after it was assessed on December 11, the Food Standards Agency's website shows.

The business, which sells Turkish, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food, has been on Cowley Road for nearly 20 years.

It was shortlisted for the best kebab restaurant outside London in the annual British Kebab Awards in 2016.

However, it was criticised by food hygiene inspectors in 2019 over the contamination risk from butchering chickens in its kitchen.

At that time the restaurant manager said while the business respected the council they disagreed about the contamination risk and prided themselves on using only the freshest ingredients.

The latest rating means that of Oxford's 408 restaurants, cafes and canteens with ratings, 348 (85%) have ratings of five and none have zero ratings.
