Abingdon's Tesco Extra store has a flooded car park.

Overnight flood water from the River Ock has seeped into the car park and covered about half of the parking spaces.

One of the roads into the site has been cordoned off because it is flooded, with all drivers using the alternative entry road past the petrol station.

At 2pm staff were doing what they could to direct drivers into the remaining parking spaces.

Oxford Mail: Abingdon Tesco ExtraThe store and the petrol station did close briefly in April due to extensive flooding, which affected an even larger section of the car park.

For a short time the only access to the store entrance was via duckboards and click and collect services were also affected as drivers were unable to get out of the car park.

At the time some residents on Abingdon Facebook questioned why the store had been built on a flood plain.

According to customers posting on Abingdon Facebook, Click and collect services are now operating from the front of the store as the area of the car park where it operates is badly hit by flooding.

By 4.45pm the situation had changed, and a Tesco spokesman said staff have now closed the whole car park but not the store.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “Our Abingdon Extra store is open to customers, but the store car park remains closed due to floodwater. We are working to have the car park open again as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

He added colleagues at the store said the whole car park has now had to be closed due to the floodwater but they don’t anticipate having to close the store at all at this point.

By 5.30pm shoppers on Abingdon Facebook were saying the store has been shut but this has not yet been confirmed by the Tesco press office.
