A team of nature lovers has surpassed the halfway point in laying a new hedge by the arboretum at the Earth Trust in Little Wittenham.

The team, named Hartley’s Hedgers, is a hedge laying group started by volunteer Paul Hartley, which has expanded to comprise 12 experienced volunteers who operate under his guidance.

The volunteers are part of the Earth Trust’s land management team who also work with rangers.

Over the last three months, the group has covered approximately 80 metres in 10 sessions using a variety of methods.

They have created a newly laid hedge, helping to define the boundary and providing a habitat for small mammals and birds.

A spokesman for the Earth Trust said: “The hedgers' efforts have been supported by our weekly land volunteer groups, with their hazel coppicing work in our woods producing hundreds of stakes and binders for the team.

“Wallingford Green Gym have lent a hand too, helping to clear the piles of brash created from the cuttings.”
