I’ve never been a fan favourite of the traditional Christmas dinner, but after a Christmas dinner night out at The Greenhouse in Banbury I may finally be converted.

I booked a table for our family at The Greenhouse on the Terrace, a rooftop dining experience located across the canal from Castle Quay Shopping Centre.

The restaurant is located inside The Light building which includes a seven-screen cinema, 10 lanes of bowling, a retro arcade, a climbing centre, indoor mini-golf, interactive darts, a karaoke room and American style pool tables.

The Christmas dinner at The Greenhouse is three courses, which includes a starter, main and dessert. Trying out the Christmas menu gave our twin 10-year-old daughters an opportunity to try out some new foods.

For our starters we ordered the roasted cauliflower and Gruyere soup, the confit squash with sage and orange, the sage and onion Scotch egg and the smoked salmon fishcake.

Our favourite and most highly recommended of the starts was the sage and onion Scotch egg and smoked salmon fishcake.

The scotch egg was delicious, and the caramelised onion chutney added a lot of flavour to the lightly breaded sausage and egg.

I am not a huge fishcake fan, but this smoked salmon fishcake had so many different unique flavours to it that I would definitely order it again.

The fish had a sort of savoury pleasant flavour which made me want to keep eating, but I found myself taking smaller bites than usual to make it last longer.

My daughter, who quite likes soup, enjoyed trying cauliflower soup for the first time, which came with a nice creamy texture mixed with the Gruyere cheese.

My wife enjoyed the confit squash with sage and orange, which had zesty pleasant taste with the combination of squash and orange flavours.

My daughters and I all ordered the traditional roast turkey dinner, which came with some quite tasty additions to the typical roast dinner.

While the roast turkey was good, my favourite parts of the main course was actually two of the sides.

The head chef Kieran Munday told us he had created his own alternate version of the traditional stuffing.

Chef Munday said: "For the stuffing, I find when bread is used in stuffings it can make it much too heavy and it also caters to the gluten free community by leaving it out."

Instead, he created tasty high-quality stuffing balls, which were a mixture of sausage, sage and onion. I am not fan of traditional stuffing, so I found the stuffing balls quite delicious.

One of my daughters also especially liked like the gravy for the roast turkey, so much she joked she could drink it.

The combination of flavours in the gravy was amazing. Head chef Kieran said pancetta, lemon and thyme gravy had slow cooked for six hours before it was served with the meal.

Head chef Munday brings a lot of personal flare to many of the dishes inspired from his own heritage, including the gravy which is a personal home-made recipe that serves every year at home.

I requested my favourite sauce from The Greenhouse to use as a gravy on my roast turkey, which is a gochujang sauce. The Greenhouse gochujang sauce is a home-made recipe from chef Munday which has a tangy slightly spicy honey flavour to it.

The gochujang sauce is so tasty I asked chef Munday if they sold it by the bottle. He said they have talked about offering branded items for sale to customers in the future.

My wife ordered the herb crusted Cornish hake, served with pommes puree otherwise known as a mashed potato and samphire and a nice flavourful parsley oil sauce poured over top of it.

The sauce poured over top of the hake had a nice marble effect across the entire dish. My wife said: “The flavour combination was really excellent.”

Our meal wouldn't be complete without dessert.

My wife the poached pear infused with Christmas spices and served with a vanilla cream.

I felt a little adventurous in trying the warm hazelnut tart topped with caramelized white chocolate mousse, since I had never eaten a tart for dessert.

I was pleasantly surprised and found myself taking tiny little bites to savour each and every bite.

One of my daughters, who ordered the chocolate brownie with a scoop of ice cream gave it high praise calling it the best brownie she’d ever had.

The Greenhouse is a great place to take your family, small or large, for your Christmas meal together and to book your office Christmas parties.

The Greenhouse restaurant is the only one of its kind in the entire country. The Greenhouse is owned by The Light cinema and entertainment venue in Banbury.
