More than 300 pupils soaked up the sunshine at the Wantage area primary school sports day.

The picture shows the athletes getting off to a flying start in the under-11 flat race at Millbrook Junior School, Grove, in June 1986.

The 40 events ranged from the usual sprint and field skirmishes to the less traditional skipping, giving pupils from all six primary schools a chance to shine.

It wasn’t just the children who enjoyed the day – lots of parents turned up and enjoyed not only the sun but cheering on their offspring.

One of the organisers said: “It was an enjoyable afternoon and the standard was particularly high this year, with a number of records being broken.”
