Thames Valley Air Ambulance has launched a Christmas appeal based around the story of a man who survived a collision thanks to their support.

In January 2022, local worker Paul, whose surname has not been revealed, was on his way to work in Faringdon when he stopped to help a stranded motorist.

In his attempt to assist, he was pinned by two vehicles, leading to the amputation of his right leg.

The Thames Valley Air Ambulance was swift to the scene, managing Paul's pain and facilitating his transit to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington where he underwent the life-altering surgery.

Since the incident, the charitable organisation's Aftercare team has been there to ensure that Paul was not alone during his challenging times.

This Christmas, an emotional reunion is due to take place between Paul and the crew who saved his life.

Paul said: "Thames Valley Air Ambulance became the people who not only picked me up off the road, but the people who continued to check in with me once I was home. I felt like someone was keeping an eye on me.

"None of us think this will happen to us. We put money in a tin and forget about it. But, if you ever need the support of Thames Valley Air Ambulance, they will be there for you.

"Without the charity, I would probably be dead. But without public support, the charity couldn’t exist.

"I don’t really know how I can thank them enough."

In an attempt to urge the public's support for the service, a new animation detailing Paul's survival story has been released.

Amanda McLean, chief executive officer at Thames Valley Air Ambulance, appreciates this effort.

She said: "Paul’s world was turned upside down in 2022 and he has been on a journey of recovery ever since, but he has come out fighting.

"Paul’s story is inspirational and we’re so grateful to him for being part of our powerful new animation.

"Our charity brings lifesaving care in an emergency, but our care also extends beyond the scene.

"Our expert crew treated Paul on the roadside and our Aftercare team provided vital support as he navigated his way through life after trauma.

"None of this would have been possible without donations from our community.

"So, this Christmas, we’re urging people to give the gift of life and help us to be there for people like Paul whenever we’re needed."
