Remembrance Sunday is when we commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military, and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

Across Oxfordshire, Remembrance Sunday is marked by ceremonies in Oxford city and our main towns as well as at many local war memorials in villages.

Oxford

On Saturday, November 11 the lord mayor of Oxford, councillor Lubna Arshad, will hold a short service in the town hall for Armistice Day.

On Remembrance Sunday the mayor will also represent the city council at the service in St Giles, starting at 10.45am. It will be conducted by the city rector, the Reverend Anthony Buckley.   

The lord mayor will be joined by the lord-lieutenant, multi-faith leaders, representatives from the University of Oxford, Oxford Brookes University, Oxfordshire County Council, Thames Valley Police, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue, the Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes.  

Representatives from Oxford’s twin cities will be in attendance, along with military units, uniformed organisations, community groups, civic dignitaries, residents and visitors from across the county.   

They will assemble from 10am at the junction of Beaumont Street and St Giles' and then proceed along St Giles’. They will be followed by the civic procession which will depart from St John’s College at 10.40am.   

There will be a two-minute silence at 11am.

After the service, the lord-lieutenant and the civic party will move to St John’s College to take the salute as the military and Royal British Legion march past. 

Abingdon

A service will be held in St Helen’s Church, East St Helen Street at 10am.

After the service, an act of remembrance will take place at the war memorial at 11am, where a ceremony and the laying of wreaths will take place.

Abingdon councillors, representatives from the British Legion, Armed Forces, clubs, societies and civic leaders will come together for the service.

Banbury

The town parade will be followed by a service at St Mary's Church before the wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial in People's Park.

The parade forms up in Broad Street at 10am and departs at 10.15am. At 10.45am the service starts at St Mary's Church. A two minute silence will be held at 11am in the church and churchyard before the wreath laying ceremony in People's Park at 11.50am.

Bicester

Uniformed organisations and local military units will take part in the parade led by ATC 2507 (Bicester) Marching Band with members of 1 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps and the Royal British Legion.

It will march from St Edburg’s Church at about 10.30am to Market Square where the outdoor service will be held for the first time. 

They will be lined up in Market Square by a Parade Marshal from 1 Regt RLC in readiness for the service and wreath laying which starts at 10.55am.

Afterwards the Mayor Cllr Harry Knight, the Commanding Officer of 1 Regt RLC Lt Col Lucinda Butler MBE and Deputy Lieutenant Miranda Markham will take the salute, before the parade marches back to the church.

Only local dignitaries will lay wreathes at the outdoor service. All other groups or individuals should take their wreath to the memorial at St Edburg’s Church and hand it over to the Honour Guard who will then lay it on their behalf.

The main service of remembrance will take place in St Edburg’s Church from 12 noon.

Carterton

The parade will start at 10.45am from St John’s Church. There will be a two minute silence at 11am followed by the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial.

Chipping Norton

The parade will assemble in the Market Square at 10.15am for a march to St Mary’s Church for the Remembrance Service.

Following the service, the members of the Royal British Legion and dignitaries will march in the Remembrance Parade to the Town Hall.

Didcot

The parade will march down Broadway from Edinburgh Drive at approximately 2.40pm.

The service will take place at around 3pm at Smallbone Recreation Ground.

Refreshments will be available at Didcot Civic Hall after the service.

Eynsham

Eynsham's Act of Remembrance will take place at the War Memorial starting at 10.45am.

Spectators should assemble in the village square with the congregations from all the churches before 10.45am.

The act of remembrance consists of: Welcomes; Reading Eynsham's Rolls of Honour; The Exhortation; at 11am - Sounding The Last Post; the two minutes silence; sounding Reveille; reciting The Kohima Epitaph; The National Anthem and laying of wreaths by dignitaries and organisations before the dismissal blessing.

Wallingford

The Remembrance parade will take place at the war memorial in the market place with a parade by marching groups, the bugler sounding the last post and a fly past.

This is followed with the readings of the names on the war memorial followed by the wreath laying which is usually done by the mayor of Wallingford, deputy lieutenant, Freeman (Army and RAF), deputy police commissioner, MPs, Royal British Legion, Oxfordshire County Council and District Council.

The market place will be closed to traffic from approximately 10am to 12 noon.

The parade will leave Goldsmith Lane car park at approximately 10.50am; bugler sounds the Last Post at approximately 10.58am; silence at 11am and the service finishes at approximately 11.30am.

Woodstock

The annual Remembrance Day parade and church service means the roads in the middle of the town will be closed from 10am to 12.30pm.

Woodstock Town Council asks that no vehicles park in front of the War Memorial on Sunday morning as this is where the parade will take place.

Witney

The Remembrance Service takes place at the War Memorial and roads will be closed from 10am.

Youth groups and military organisations will form up in the Market Square before proceeding to the memorial with their leaders at around 10.50am.

The Town Band, ministers and members of the congregation from St Mary’s join the others at the War Memorial.

The short service includes, readings, hymns and prayers, the Last Post, followed by two minutes silence and then the Reveille.

The names of the organisations laying wreaths will be announced by pupils from Henry Box and Wood Green School and the wreath laying will be coordinated by leaders of Witney’s Army and Air Cadets.

The closing prayers and the National Anthem draw the service at the memorial to a close.

A civic service will be held afterwards at St Mary’s Church.
