Witney will gather on Remembrance Sunday to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that their lives during the global conflicts in the 20th century.

The service at the War Memorial on Sunday, November 12 will commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women involved in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

Fallen servicemen and women will also be remembered afterwards at a church service at St Mary’s Church.

The roads around the Market Square will be closed from 10am to allow people to gather safely to take part in the service.

This will include the town's youth groups and military organisations who will form up in their groups in the Market Square before proceeding to the memorial with their leaders at around 10.50am.

The short service will include, readings, hymns and prayers, the Last Post, followed by a two minutes' silence and then the Reveille.

The wreath laying element of the Act of Remembrance then takes place.

The names of the organisations laying wreaths will be announced by pupils from Henry Box and Wood Green School and the wreath laying will be coordinated by leaders of Witney’s Army and Air Cadets.

The closing prayers and the National Anthem draw the service at the memorial to a close.

Many individuals, groups and organisations will continue on to take part in the Civic Service afterwards at St Mary’s Church which is open to all.

This year the service can be followed digitally on a mobile phone or other device by scanning a QR code available on Witney Town Council's website.

The codes will be posted at multiple locations in the roads approaching the Market Square, Memorial and in the area around the Town Hall and Buttercross.

For those that prefer traditional paper, some copies of the service will be handed out by members of Witney Town Council staff and there will be recycling points where these can be deposited after the service.

Alternative bus stops can be found outside the Methodist Church in High Street and in Welch Way for the period that the road closures are in place.

The roads in the area will reopen at around noon to 12.30pm.
