The historic covered market in Oxford has celebrated its 249th anniversary with a “super special occasion” planned for next year.

The city’s beloved indoor market, which features more than 50 small, independent stalls, turned 249 on Wednesday (November 1).

Oxford’s covered market originally arose from the need to bring the surrounding outdoor markets off the street.

A spokesperson for the market said: “The building of the market was one of the first times, if not the very first time, that town and gown worked together on a specific project.

“Thank you to everyone from traders past and present, and to our wonderful customers who make a beeline to shop local and shop independent.

“Next year is of course our 250th anniversary, and we’re busily working on plans to mark this super special occasion.”
